Among the many unique services offered by The Knit With is making tailor-made buttonholes in knitted and crocheted fabric buttonholes which are identical to the buttonholes in garments offered by the finest designers working in woven fabrics and sold in specialty clothing stores.
Tailored buttonholes are superior to holes left in knitting; tailored buttonholes hold their shape and hold the button better. Unlike knit-in holes, simple wear (the manipulation of the button through the buttonhole) does not cause a tailored buttonhole to stretch or break and consequently ravel your knitting. The hundreds of tiny stitches comprising the buttonhole last!
Buttonholes can be tailored in two styles: straight and keyhole. The straight buttonhole is recommended because it is superior for the inherent elasticity of knitted fabric. Buttonholes can be made in 8 sizes to accommodate buttons with diameters ranging between 1/4 inch and 1 3/8 inches.
Harkening to the medieval origins of buttons, buttonholes for female garments are made on the right and buttonholes for garments to be worn by males are made on the left. And, just like knitting, buttonholes have a front side and a reverse side; at The Knit With, all buttonholes are tailored to show the right side of the stitching comprising the buttonhole. Similarly, the threads used in making the buttonhole are carefully selected to match the dominate color of the knitted garment. To ensure the tailoring of a proper buttonhole and to overcome the inherent elasticity of knitted fabric, grossgrain ribbon is applied to the inside of the garment where the buttonhole is to be placed.
Buttonholes can be applied to most garments within 20 days of receipt of a tailoring-ready garment. All orders for buttonholes service are accepted upon specification of whether the garment is intended for male or female wear, the number of buttonholes to be tailored and a sample of the button to be applied to the garment.
