Professional  Finishing

Differentiating the handmade from the homemade, The Knit With’s professional finishing service relieves anxious knitters of the chore of assembling garments with the same degree of care employed in creating the knitted fabric. The skills required to properly assemble and finish a handknit garment are entirely different from the skills required to create the handknit pieces of a fashionable, durable and exciting garment. Indeed, finishing often distinguishes a handmade garment from the simple homemade.

The incomparably skilled fibre artists comprising The Knit With staff are skilled in professionally assembling and finishing handknits. Accomplished knitters and crocheters, The Knit With’s finishing staff possesses both the expertise and years of experience to put the finishing touches of on your carefully knitted garment—whether it is to be worn as a blouse, a coat, a dress or grace your home as an afghan.

The Knit With’s professional finishing service relieves you of the anxiety of how your completed knitting will be received by others.

The cost for professional finishing varies according to the garment type and the time involved. Extra charges for providing and installing zippers and tailoring of buttonholes may apply. An estimate of the finishing expense is provided at the time the work is accepted. Usually garments accepted for finishing are completed within 20 business days.

NOTE: Due to high holiday volume only garments received for finishing prior to November 15 can be guaranteed to be completed by December 20, each year; garments accepted after November 15 will be finished, in order, according to our normal schedule for finishing services.

If you ship your hand knit garment to The Knit With for professional finishing, we recommend that you insure the garment for the value of the yarn plus the cost of purchasing a replacement hand knit garment. Along with your garment, be sure to include both day and evening phone numbers in the event further consultation is necessary together with your estimate of the total insured value of the garment, your name, return address and your credit card type and account number and a copy of the knitting instructions you followed. Garments requested to be return shipped are shipped by insured US Priority mail unless Express Mail service is requested. Insurance and shipping costs are applied to your bill.

Tailored Buttonholes

Among the many unique services offered by The Knit With is making tailor-made buttonholes in knitted and crocheted fabric — buttonholes which are identical to the buttonholes in garments offered by the finest designers working in woven fabrics and sold in  specialty clothing stores.

Tailored buttonholes are superior to holes left in knitting; tailored buttonholes hold their shape and hold the button  better.  Unlike knit-in holes, simple wear (the manipulation of the button through the buttonhole) does not cause a  tailored buttonhole to stretch or break and consequently ravel your knitting.  The hundreds of tiny stitches comprising the buttonhole last!

Buttonholes can be tailored in two styles: straight and keyhole. The straight buttonhole is recommended because it is superior for the inherent elasticity of knitted fabric.  Buttonholes can be made in 8 sizes to accommodate buttons with diameters ranging between 1/4 inch and 1 3/8 inches.

Harkening to the medieval origins of buttons, buttonholes for female garments are made on the right and buttonholes for garments to be worn by males are made on the left.  And, just like knitting, buttonholes have a front side and a reverse side; at The Knit With, all buttonholes are tailored to show the right side of the stitching comprising the buttonhole.  Similarly, the threads used in making the buttonhole are carefully selected to match the dominate color of the knitted garment.  To ensure the tailoring of a proper buttonhole and to overcome the inherent elasticity of knitted fabric, grossgrain ribbon is applied to the inside of the garment where the buttonhole is to be placed.

Buttonholes can be applied to most garments within 20 days of receipt of a tailoring-ready  garment.  All orders for buttonholes service are accepted upon specification of whether the garment is intended for male or female wear, the number of buttonholes to be tailored and a sample of the button to be applied to the garment.   The link below provides a form to send with your garment including all necessary specifications and an estimate of charges.  Button Hole Estimate.

If you ship your hand knit garment to The Knit With for buttonhole tailoring, we recommend that you insure the garment for the value of the yarn plus the cost of purchasing a replacement hand knit garment. Along with your garment, be sure to include both day and evening phone numbers in the event further consultation is necessary together with your estimate of the total insured value of the garment, your name, return address and your credit card type and account number. Garments requested to be return shipped are shipped by insured US Priority mail unless Express Mail service is requested.  Insurance and shipping costs are applied to your bill.

The cost for tailoring a buttonhole varies according to the size of the buttonhole; buttonholes are stitched one size larger than the button.  Incidental charges also apply for providing, stitching and blocking the grossgrain ribbon ( charges based upon standard one yard increments ) and a thread match charge may also apply.  Note that buttonholes of more than one inch or buttonholes applied to garments larger than a sweater, incur a fee of $6.50 per buttonhole.

NOTE: Due to high holiday volume, orders for buttonhole services received after December 1 each year may not be fulfilled according to our standard schedule.

Custom Knitting

Have an idea for an ideal sweater but lack either the time or skill to accomplish it? Make The Knit With’s custom knitting service your silent partner in executing the garment of your dreams.

Whether a garment of your design,  or one drawn from The Knit With’s extensive collection  (and archive) of garment styles and patterns, The Knit With’s custom knitting service is the ideal way to realize your dream garment — a fashionable or classic garment handknit from the wools of the world or the most fashionable designer yarns.

The Knit With’s custom knitting service begins with your selection of a garment style or design and moves to the selection of a choice yarn drawn from the shop’s extensive palette of natural fibre and designer yarns. Suggestions are provided concerning the appropriateness of yarns and twists for the type of garment desired.  Accurate measurements are then taken of the person who is to wear the finished handknit. After progress consultations, when necessary, your dream garment, handknit to your specifications, is ready to wear.

Custom knitting is appropriate for any garment or knitting project, whether the mother of the bride dress or a blanket for the newest member of the family. Custom knitting orders are accepted throughout the year and usually require approximately ninety days for completion. Custom knitting intended for holiday gifts should be initiated by September 1.

Costs for custom knitting are always quoted in advanced and vary depending upon the yarn and garment style and size selected.
